“From Songs to Score – A Conversation with Jeff Russo”
Emmy-winning and Grammy-nominated composer, Jeff Russo, is creating some of the most varied and compelling music for television, film, and video games. Russo earned an Emmy Award, and two additional nominations, for his score on FX’s Emmy Award-winning and Golden Globe-winning series Fargo. His music can be heard on Bartlett Sher’s drama feature film Oslo, which premieres May 29th on HBO Max; Paramount+’s Star Trek: Picard; Star Trek: Discovery; and Clarice; Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy; Apple TV+’s For All Mankind and Starz’s Power. Past credits include Hulu’s The Act; FX’s Legion; Starz’s Counterpart; Noah Hawley’s feature film Lucy in the Sky; Mark Wahlberg’s action-thriller film, Mile 22; Craig Macneill’s Lizzie; and more. Russo also received a BAFTA nomination for Best Music for Annapurna Interactive’s video game, What Remains of Edith Finch. Day one symposium topics include:

DAY TWO – SCOTT SMALLEY

“Advanced Art of Orchestration primer with Scott Smalley”
Preeminent Hollywood orchestrator, Scott Smalley (RoboCop, Starship Troopers, Mission: Impossible), returns with a primer to his new “Advanced Art of Orchestration” class. Built on his renowned “The Art of Orchestration” classes, this Advanced course delves into the orchestral works of the greatest composers of all time to glean inspiration and orchestration techniques we can use for today’s film scores. Attendees of this primer will be welcome to continue further study in depth with Scott in future group sessions.
Scott will look at Jerry Goldsmith’s astounding score for “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” as the quintessential “Hollywood movie sound,” including Goldsmith’s annotated sketches, illustrating the “DNA” of his chord progressions. Scott will provide attendees with a definitive list of “the greats’” must-have scores for film music study, and provide examples of how they could be re-orchestrated. This will include works by Bach, Prokofiev and Beethoven, to show where many modern compositional techniques originated and how we may use them now. We will be exploring the technique of how to orchestrate any style of music for the cinematic stage. He’ll also provide a crash course in the “Zed Clef.” Prepare to blaze through some incredible material and concepts. Music/score reading abilities are recommended.

Jeff Russo is an Emmy Award-winning and Grammy-nominated composer, scoring varied and compelling music for film, television and video games. He won an Emmy Award, and received two additional Emmy nominations for his thrilling and angst-producing score on FX’s Golden Globe and Emmy winning Fargo. In addition to composing music for film and television, Russo is a founding member, lead guitarist and co-songwriter of two-time Grammy nominated, multi-platinum selling rock band, Tonic. Their debut album, Lemon Parade, posted three singles in the U.S. Mainstream rock charts’ Top 10 with “If You Could Only See” rocketing to number one. In 2003, the band received two Grammy nominations, one for “Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal” for “Take Me As I Am,” and one for “Best Rock Album.”
SCOTT SMALLEY BIO
Steven Scott Smalley (aka Scott Smalley) learned arranging and orchestration from the greatest Hollywood musical talents of the 20th century, including his father, legendary composer – arranger – lyricist Jack Smalley. From playing in bands and doing music prep and arranging on TV variety shows in the 1970s, Scott moved on to become an orchestrator and conductor on some of the biggest movies of the 1980s, 1990s and on into the 21st century, adding his touch to scores by composers including Basil Poledouris, Alan Silvestri, and Danny Elfman. He has taught advanced orchestration courses at UCLA Extension and for the Film Music Network. He continues to make music come alive from his studio in the forested mountains just outside of Los Angeles.
